To Whom It May Concern:

I am excited to have the opportunity to come to Barcelona and intern with a company in my field of graphic design. I have never lived outside of my home state of California in the USA. I am looking forward to the experiences I will have and the new perspectives I will gain from living in another country. I have never travelled to Europe, so I will be actively exploring the many areas and cultures of the Spain and the nearby countries.

In addition to cultural experiences, I look forward to the opportunity to work with other professionals in my career field and learn from their expertise. I feel that having a broad range of experiences in my field will greatly improve my adaptability and creativity as a designer. Designing with a company in a different country than my own will allow me to examine the design process with a new perspective. Experiences like this will help me be competitive in my field.

I chose Spain to live and work in for two main reasons. First, I have always been intrigued by the country and its culture. I am very interested in learning about the ways of life and visiting the many beautiful areas in Spain. Secondly, being from California, where there is a very large Hispanic population, knowing the Spanish language is a huge asset. I have taken Spanish in high school and college, but I have not reached a fluent level. I feel that my learning will excel when I am required to speak it on a regular basis. I have enough background in Spanish that I should pick up the language fairly easily once I am immersed.

I feel that I have sufficient training and experience in the field of graphic design to be productive and beneficial for the company that I intern with. I have received a certificate in graphic design from the University of California in Santa Barbara (I also received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the same college). I currently work as a graphic designer at an athletic club in Santa Barbara, California. I am responsible for creating advertisements, other marketing materials, a monthly newsletter, posters and other print media for the club and its marketing department. I also work as a web designer in my free time. I am creating websites for 3 companies in the US at this time (a vineyard, chocolate company, and award engraving company). I work with many graphics programs on both Mac (I am familiar with the new OS X system) and PC computers: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Quark Xpress, Pagemaker, Dreamweaver. I have an artistic eye and a sophisticated, uncluttered style of designing. I am not so set in my ways as to be un-open to other styles and methods of design. I welcome other perspectives and am happy to share my own.

I look forward to having the opportunity to work with you.

Best regards,
Annie Fifer
